As some of you may know, Sage has discontinued Sage 50 Essentials and no longer sell it to new users.
However, if you have Sage 50 Essentials and you’re still using it, what does this mean for you?
We had an email last week from a client who runs a small business, and that has a Sage 50 Essentials subscription, telling us that they had been contacted by Sage (UK) Limited to inform them that Sage 50 Essentials is being discontinued at the end of February 2021 and that they should consider switching to Sage Business Cloud Accounting.
The phone call left our client confused about whether they could continue to use their Essentials software, so we thought we would put an FAQ guide together to clear things up.
Here are the answers to your questions and what you need to know.
Q: Can I continue to use Sage 50 Essentials after the end of February 2021?
A: Yes, if you have an active subscription your software will continue to be supported and you will get licence updates. However, if you have a perpetual licence with SageCover, then your SageCover renewal will not renew and you will be using your software unsupported.
Q: Why have I been told Sage 50 Essentials is being discontinued?
A: This is because Sage don’t sell it anymore, so it is discontinued and can’t be purchased as a new licence. However, if you have Essentials, you can continue to use it and if you have an active subscription your software will continue to be supported and you will get licence updates. If you have a perpetual licence with SageCover, then your SageCover renewal will not renew and you will be using your software unsupported.
Q: What happens if I choose to carry on using my Sage 50 Essentials licence without SageCover?
A: You will not be supported by Sage (UK) Limited and if you have any technical issues you need their help with, you would need to upgrade your software to an active subscription and the latest version to get support.
Q: What is Sage Business Cloud Accounting?
A: It’s a cloud based accounting product from Sage. All your information is stored and accessed online from a web browser and is not installed locally or on a network.
Q: How easy is it to switch from Sage 50 to Sage Business Cloud Accounting?
A: There are guidelines online on the steps you need to complete to switch as the user. You can choose to do this yourself or ask a Sage Partner (like us!) us to switch everything across for you. To find out more about our Sage 50 to Sage Business Cloud Accounting switching service, feel free to get in touch.
Q: What if I want to stay on Sage 50 and not move to Sage Business Cloud after the end of February 2021?
A: You can continue using your Sage 50 Essentials software if you have an active subscription. If you don’t have an active subscription and don’t want to use an unsupported version of Sage, you can upgrade to Sage 50 Standard, which starts at RRP £65 per month – we offer discounts, so if you are thinking about this upgrade:
We hope we have managed to answer all your questions with regards to the discontinuation of Sage Essentials. If you have any further queries please get in touch, we will be more than happy to offer our support.
