How to prepare to bring your payroll in-house

Do you currently outsource your payroll but you’re considering bringing it in-house?

Payroll can be confusing if you’re not sure what you’re doing, so when you first start taking on employees it may be easier for you to outsource this to an outside party. Someone who is an expert in this field. 

However, the more your business grows it may become more viable to look after your payroll in-house and process this yourself. Not only to save money, but also to allow you to have greater control.

It’s important to remember that the legislation for payroll is always changing and you need to be sure that you remain compliant. This is why payroll is one of the most expensive tasks you can outsource, so bringing it in-house may be better for your cash flow!

If you’re thinking about bringing your payroll processing in-house, now is the perfect time of year to be thinking ahead.

The best time to switch your payroll is at the beginning of a tax year on 6th April, but you can switch mid tax year.

If you’re looking to switch, there’s lots to consider beforehand, such as:

  1. What software to choose – what functionality does it need? Who will access it? Does it need to be networked?
  2. How you need to set up the payment elements
  3. When you should add your employees’ data
  4. Whether you are migrating data over or going to build your database from scratch (tip: you could import!)
