From November 2023 HMRC will remove paper VAT registration

From November 2023, HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) has advised that businesses and their agents should apply for VAT registration through the VAT Registration Service, as the paper VAT1 form will be removed.

HMRC has stated that “it’s the quickest, most secure, and easiest way to register, and over 95% of their customers already use this service)”.

You will, however, need to have a unique tax reference (UTR) number to be able to use the online VAT registration.

A small number of businesses will be exempt from applying online if they are digitally excluded, or unable to use the online VAT registration service. Anyone who needs the paper form to register for VAT will need to call the VAT helpline to request one.

Agents will be able to continue to use the online VAT Registration Service through the Agent Services Account.
